Prototyping and Playtesting: Turn Each Version into One Answerable Question

Technical terms: Iterative prototyping, Playtesting, Individual prototype, Accumulative prototype

Iterative prototyping builds the cheapest playable form that can test a design question, observes what happens, revises, and repeats. Playtesting is structured observation of people using that form.

An individual prototype is a disposable experiment for one risky idea. An accumulative prototype is a growing foundation into which validated pieces are integrated. The first favors fast learning; the second reveals interaction and moves toward production.

Write the question before building. Observe behavior as well as opinion; players often report their feelings accurately while guessing incorrectly about the cause.
