Feedback Loops, Emergence, and Chaos: Watch Outputs Become Future Inputs

Technical terms: Positive feedback loop, Negative feedback loop, Emergent behavior, Chaos

A positive feedback loop amplifies change: an advantage or tendency produces more of itself. A negative feedback loop reduces deviation and pushes the system toward stability.

Emergent behavior is a pattern produced by interacting rules and participants even though no individual rule directly specifies it. Chaos describes extreme sensitivity in which small state differences lead to sharply different later outcomes despite deterministic rules.

One crossing can open several new endpoints, causing the network to branch rapidly: positive feedback. Spatial crowding can make further additions harder: negative feedback. A theme may emerge through several locally chosen words without having been planned from the start.

What you can do with it

Design the local relationships, then observe what recurs. Preserve surprising behavior that supports the experience, constrain loops that crowd out alternatives, and do not claim every accident as intentional depth.
